Most insurance companies do not insure imported specialty vehicles, even if they are registered for use on U.S. public streets.

The reason for this is because Japan uses a 10 digit VIN, instead of the U.S. standard 17 digit VIN. So, many insurance companies feel that they are a higher risk of being a stolen vehicle, or becoming stolen.
